As de espadas (1948)

Texts by Alberto Ongaro

Drawings by Hugo Pratt

The series first came out on the Argentine weekly “Salgari” from issue 62 (August, 1948), editorial Abril.

It is actually the Asso di Picche series that had been produced in Italy and was reproduced here with a slight change to the protagonist’s name. To the 19 episodes that was already known, the writers added new stories which lay undiscovered for many years until they were recently unearthed thanks to the untiring research of Guillermo E. Parker in Argentina and Gianni Brunoro, Paolo Gallinari and Roberto Reali in Italy. Here we see As de Espadas fac- ing his formidable doubles (Ace against Ace, episode 20), rising up as a relentless avenger against the Ku Klux Klan (Ace against the Ku Klux Klan, episode 21), destroying a fearsome band of thieves (The Three Queens, episode 22) and finally annihilating the new band that reemerges from the ashes of the previous one (The Return of the Queen of Clubs, episode 23).
