Indian Lore (1947)

Texts and drawings by Hugo Pratt

This is a single story that appeared in a relatively unknown fortnightly magazine that was published with the same name. The story, which was taken up again by Ivaldi, came out
in issue 13 (July, 1968) of the publisher’s magazine,“Sgt. Kirk”.

This was the first time the cartoonist had created a story involving American Indians (Seneca people and Mohicans in this case) struggling against white settlers during the Franco-English war and the American war of Independence. The whole story unravels in just two pages and remains incomplete. Although the rendering is still rather crude and naïf, this work is extremely interesting as it highlights some of the elements that Pratt will later artistically develop to create one of his most important masterpieces, Wheeling.
