In the cold winter of 1942, convoys of Allied ships are plying the Atlantic menaced by the nightmare of the lethal German U-boats and mines. The telegrapher Peter Wayman is on board an escort cruiser hit by a torpedo from an enemy submarine but he must stay at his station to launch an SOS with the ship’s position. However, Wayman panics and jumps into the sea before sending the message and it is a fellow-sailor that sends out the SOS. For a long time Wayman is haunted by feelings of guilt, but he redeems himself in a subsequent action.
