LIEGE, LE CADRAN. 26 MARCH TO 14 JUNE 2026

Hugo Pratt in Liège. “Imaginary Geographies” opens at Le Cadran Expo – Following Siena, the solo exhibition dedicated to Hugo Pratt continues its European tour. The exhibition revisits the curatorial project previously presented in Tuscany, structured as a journey through the places – both real and inner – that shaped Pratt’s imagination. A journey through original artwork, archival materials and visual references that capture the complexity of an author capable of weaving together adventure, literature and memory.

The move to Liège marks a new phase in the exhibition’s international tour, strengthening the dialogue with European audiences and confirming the interest in a body of work that continues to inspire diverse interpretations and perspectives.

LE CADRAN

LIÈGE

The exhibition ‘Hugo Pratt, Imaginary Geographies’ is curated by Patrizia Zanotti and Patrik Amsellem. A project by Cong SA, Opera Laboratori and Inventives.

ON THE PATHS OF THE IMAGINATION

Following its stop at the Palazzo delle Papesse in Siena, the exhibition *Imaginary Geographies*, dedicated to Hugo Pratt, arrives in Liège at Le Cadran Expo, reaffirming its international scope.

The exhibition project, previously presented in Tuscany by Patrizia Zanotti and Patrik Amsellem, is now being revived and adapted to this new setting, whilst retaining its narrative structure: a journey through the multiple geographies of Pratt’s work — real, literary and inner — capturing the complexity of an imaginary world woven from travel, memory and cultural layers.

THE EXHIBITION ITINERARY

The exhibition brings together over three hundred original works — comic strips, watercolours and illustrations — accompanied by preparatory materials, sketches and documents that reveal the artist’s creative process. Alongside these, multimedia installations and ethnographic objects expand the narrative, highlighting the visual and cultural sources that fuelled his imagination.

The exhibition is structured as an open itinerary, a sort of mosaic of artistic and biographical references that invites visitors to chart their own path through the stories and places explored by Pratt. A journey that brings together direct experience, memory and the narrative dimension.

THE EXHIBITION VENUE

In Liège, the exhibition will be hosted at Le Cadran, an iconic building within the former Liège-Carré railway station, which has been temporarily converted into a cultural space. As a place of departures, arrivals and connections, it resonates directly with the world of Corto Maltese. The architecture of the venue evokes travel and movement. Its location, in the immediate vicinity of the city centre, ensures accessibility for all types of visitors.

The exhibition design will make full use of this symbolic dimension: entering the exhibition is like embarking on a journey. The visitor becomes a traveller, like Pratt’s hero, crossing continents and realms of the imagination.

In this new configuration, Imaginary Geographies continues to offer a reflection on the relationship between narrative and space, between lived experience and narrative construction, whilst retaining its ability to engage with diverse places and audiences.

HUGO PRATT, IMAGINARY GEOGRAPHIES

“Hugo Pratt, Imaginary Geographies” is the catalogue of the retrospective exhibition held in Siena from 10 April to 19 October 2025, republished as an adaptation for the exhibition in Liège. A journey through Hugo Pratt’s graphic literature, via seven gateways to the imagination: Corto Maltese and all the other stories and characters born of Pratt’s enchantment, the female protagonists, the influences of cinema and pop art, and the real and imaginary literary references in his work.

Over 330 colour and black-and-white photographs, watercolours, original plates, comic books and period material. To conclude, the volume treats the reader to a complete Corto Maltese adventure, *Sogno di un mattino di mezzo inverno*, with new colouring by Patrizia Zanotti.

Published in three languages: Italian, French, English.

Seas, borderlands, extraordinary encounters. Crossing these seven doors means delving into the language of the Venetian master, discovering how his stories take shape between watercolours and ink, between reality and dreams. It means losing oneself and finding oneself again, just as happens to Corto Maltese every time he crosses a new border and a new story.
